Just had a WD 1-tb external drive fail. We have tons of photos/data on it that I really want to save.
Researching on line, it appears the WD power supply (both the external cable and onboard electronics) are prone to failure. So rather than bothering w/ the warranty return I want to just replace the enclosure. So I pulled the drive, which is a standard 1tb Caviar Green unit.
Can anyone recommend a decent, inexpensive external SATA drive enclosure and let em know where to get it?
thanks...

Frys. You can get one for $15-20, even USB 3.0 ones now!

You could pick up an external dock by Thermaltake. Thermaltakeusa»Storage»BlacX»BlacX : BlacX N0028USU
They can be purchased at Bestbuy as well, there are other types similar but I havent tried them.

Orrrr....
I could realize the cat had eaten through the power cord BEFORE taking the drive apart...
Now I have a jigsaw puzzle on my hands...hey, one piece left over. Wonder where that goes...

one of my favorite tools in the toolbox...
the SATA/IDE to USB adapters (there's a few different makers available) are extremely handy if you don't need the enclosure...

I recommend the AcomData external HD enclosure. They for me have been my replacements for some hard drives that have had enclosure failures.
Like my Seagate External, Maxtor External and Lacie external. I replaced their stock casing with AcomData and KNOCK ON WOOD, they are still running strong after 2 years.

I would go with a Drobo as even if you have a drive failure you won't loose any date. It has redundant backup. A little pricey, but works great!

Hook it up eSata and drop a pair of WD Black drives in it and runs like a dream.

$30 bucks I believe.
So nice to drop in any which drives you want and store the drive somewhere else (for real backup).

I'm eyeballing the Drobo S w/network box so bad right now for the home network.
