A friend of mine in IT is almost daily having to replace some part of a Dell computer at his office. Geeze....97% failure rate. Even Microsoft's XBox 360 was better.

I have never recommended Dell to anyone because of this. When I was working at a local computer shop Dells would come in and they were never pretty parts wise. One time I saw 3 mobo's soldered together to make a single board, end run video cards that appeared to be missing features and a few times parts so old all I could think is that they had to be used parts sold as new and so much more. But that's my personal experience and opinion and I know plenty of people that drool over their Dells LOL

according to newly unsealed documents, Dell knew these systems were full of dangerously faulty motherboards all along.
HP's documents must still be sealed.

Bad caps have shown up in quite a few enthusiast motherboards, too.

What's up with them? Didn't they used to be known for quality?

Started cutting corners to increase profits. It's the unfortunate cycle of business in America.

They were never really known for quality. DELL was the company that took computers from "affordable" to "cheap" and they always did that by cutting corners.

What they were known for was their tech support and how much of it was included with the system. But I can't ever remember a time when Dell and quality were synonymous with each other when it came to parts.

We have Dell at our School, and never had to replace anything from them so far on any machine. So far we have been extremely happy. We have been using Dell for 4 years now with no issues.

that's not entirely a reason to build your own, it should however be another deterrent to not purchase a Dell.
