Changing File Names Easier? - 07-26-2010, 06:39 AM

I just wanted to know if anyone knew of a software for Mac that allowed a way to change file names easier.

I download all my pics from the camera and they automatically go to my iPhoto and it creates a nice simple folder and organizes it well. Only bad thing it always downloads as a DSC0000 number file. I would like to be able to change that much easier in bulk rather than having to do one at a time.

If you know a way or know of a software please share.

If your need extends beyond images, look at A Better Find Rename. Excellent software, along with their other Mac offerings (I haven't tried their Windows offerings yet).

I use Bridge as well to do this sort of thing.

I rename all my files into the format :

<metadata YYYYMMDD>_<metadata sequence number>

which makes filenames like :

20100725_4387

and sometimes

<metadata YYYYMMDD>_<metadata sequence number>_<event ID>

which makes file names like

20100725_5213_fcdallas0714

The great thing about Bridge is that, once the user has these rules set, there is no need to change it from import to import since they are based on the photo metadata. It's "set it and forget it".

I only wish Bridge would make the containing folders...

You could also use Automator. If all you are doing is changing the name to something else, you can do that easy with Automator and it works fast, because Automator doesn't really use any memory to run.

Thank you all for the suggestions I will be looking into these all this evening and see what will be best for me.
