System Question...Crashing...'not-responding'... - 08-27-2010, 01:08 PM

In the last couple months, I've noticed things like Lightroom - when I connect to my D700 if I don't 'leave it alone' - I'll get the 'not-responding' faded out program stuff.... It's occurred about a dozen times in the last 60 days or so....

Today - I was doing a crapload of stuff on my pc - Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service decided to crash on me....at least per my 'problem details'....and got the blue screen of death with a message about memory....

Brad is going to be home in about 2 weeks - but rather than dump a computer issue on him when he gets back - I thought I'd get input from y'all...

I ran the Windows Performance Info & Tools...(got a 5.9 on their index thing....due to 'data transfer rate' it said....and this is what it spit out at me:

Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+

The gaming graphics score is based on the primary graphics adapter. If this system has linked or multiple graphics adapters, some software applications may see additional performance benefits.
Caution: Based on the results of the WinSAT Disk assessment, your system drive may have slower response times under some workloads. Performance results will depend on the specific applications used and the amount of memory available. If your experience is satisfactory, no action is needed.

-------------------------------

I just noticed that my c drive is probably a bit heavy....would that impact it much?

If there's something I need to run to get you more info....or something you'd suggest doing...let me know! I appreciate it!

Here's a little application you can get that will show you how much memory you are using at a given time. It could help you see what your system memory load is during run-time, and which processes are using it:

Hmmm...doesn't sound good. BSOD's are almost always related to either a hardware failure (or pending failure) or a poorly written driver. You said the error was related to memory. This could either be the system RAM or video RAM. I'd suggest checking CNET's Downloads to see if there's a free (or cheap) application to do a full hardware analysis.

I've had video RAM crap out, and it did the same thing yours did. Everything chugging along and then...BLAMO! BSOD. Really sucks when you're in the middle of something significant.

The diminishing HD space (you have about 22% left) is also of concern. But, as noted, this sounds more like a hardware issue.

Try a Drive cleanup, Start>Accesories>system tools

Drive clean up

Then get the latest drivers for your motherboard/computer. Particularly the Motherboard chipset drivers. It looks like you have integrated Video and that robs from system resources. When you are transfering....are these RAW files? Raw + JPG? The size of the files chokes the system when transfering through USB or an internal card reader(which is connected the same as USB.

If you get the latest chipset, that will replace the video and chipset drivers and might fix the BSOD.

Do you have a back-up of the important files?

Is the inside of the box clean and are all the fans running? Could be a overheating.

Rson, I don't know if your explanation helped Cajungaltx, but it does point to a possible problem I have with Elements. when downloading a large amount of RAW files it just gives me the "ELEMENTS stopped responding msg", I must be trying to put thru too much info. when I only have a few files going in it runs OK.

Sorry I didn't see your response until just now Rich.... I'm spending a couple days cleaning up/cleaning out crap on my pc....

To answer your questions - I shoot in straight raw format.

I'll finish cleaning it up a bit, then run the cleanup. If I run into problems, I'll definitely give you a shout - thanks so much for helping me out!

Rich is the man! He definitely knows his stuff. Just ask a whole lot of members on this forum about his experience. He's helped plenty of them. Donna, do yourself a favor and call the man. You'll be glad you did.

There is a chance that one of your memory sticks have started down the road to death.

Then again a recent software installation or even an update can cause this. a bad driver file can cause this. you can troubleshoot by rolling back to a recent restore point and noting what installations were involved with that restore point if the stop points cease then whatever software related to that restore point was the cause.

If that doesnt work then the problem may be hardware beginning to fail. if it is a CPU issue the system will just stop; no screen, no sound, no i/o. if its a HDD the system wont boot. if its a ram module typically you get the BSOD.

if it is in fact a ram stick try pulling one then rebooting. try booting with one stick at a time.

hope that helps

True, but had she not mentioned that it happens when downloaded from the D700 and that is the only time, I would put that as a low prob. I have a computer now that has a memory issue...blue screens whenever it wanted and usually with a Bad_pool_data, memory_management, or IRQ_error. Doean't matter the program or what I am doing. Swapped my ram and zero issues and no crashes.

My hypothosis, Transferring Raw files from the USB to disk is cratering the system, the files are huge and the infrastructure has trouble ingesting them while doing anything else.

Oh yeah, cajun, how big is the catalog you are downloaded to? A friend which will remain nameless had 15000 pictures in the catalog and it was crashing all the time.

I'll have to check - but I'm thinking 58k worth of images? I've heard various opinions on using catalogs - at this point Ive just done the default catalog. Would you suggest a different option?

I'm getting a new system in a bit - haf-x case, amd phenom six core CPU and new mobo ( I'm on my phone so I'll get the particulars in a few)... Plus DDR3 memory.... And I'm up in the air on a SSd for my c drive... Got a sale page yesterday with a 120 gb SSd drive for $99.
