Apple LED cinema display epic fail - 10-14-2010, 04:26 PM

I use a 17-inch MPB (latest generation as of May 2010) for work, and have a 24-inch Apple LED Cinema Display I plug it into when in the office. I've really enjoyed it, and have found that the glossy screen isn't a problem for general use or editing photos. It's all about controlling extra light and glare. The setup was perfect for about five months.

On Monday, the display was on for about an hour or less. I heard a popping/sizzling sound and then a few seconds later smoke started pouring out of the display. I quickly unplugged it from the outlet and then separated the laptop. The thing smoked for about a minute or so afterward. Thankfully, I got a warranty replacement. I'm waiting to hear what went wrong with the original display. This could be an isolated incident (hope it is in my case), but just word to the wise: with any electronics that generate heat, don't leave them on for long periods unsupervised. I hate to think what could have happened if I'd left my office and this happened.
