DVI-D vs VGA Connection ? - 11-16-2010, 10:34 AM

I just bought a new PC that has both VGA and a DVI-D video connector. I have a monitor that is high definition capable but have never used anything but the VGA connection. I use the PC for mostly web surfing and Lightroom 3.2 applications. If I were to use the DVI-D connection would I realize much better picture quality? In particular, would my Lightroom screen look better?

You won't know until you try, but as a general rule, yes, the DVI connector can provide a far superior image.

DVI is digital, VGA is analog, you can use higher resolutions with DVI

Caveat - If your monitor is a digital monitor (LCD, etc) then the DVI is a better idea. If you're still using a CRT there's not much difference.

There are two DVI cables.

Both will work.

One has 4 more conductors. I can't recall what its called. It makes a big difference.

I ordered mine from Office Depot for $12.00 or so.

On Edit:

My Bad, you are talking about the good one, Dual Link.

$17 or so now.

Hey Rich, I may be wrong but I did not think that either analog or dual DVI had hard limits. Analog would be limited by the ramdac bandwidth which in theory could be astronomical, the same goes for dual DVI being limited on the data bus (as I recall something like 170hz at 10 bits times the two channels). Of course analog will show more colors too.....

no point in analogue on an LCD.

HDMI/DVI skips the analogue VGA step, so, less noise! :)
