Talking Merry Christmas to me... Power Supply.... RAM Question - 12-26-2010, 03:48 PM

My amazing husband got me a new case - the HAFX case... a new mother board... the Gigabyte 890FXA-UD5....and a new CPU....the AMD Phenom II x6 1075T.

His plan was to pull the power supply out of my current pc....and the 8GB of memory....

Only one problem.... the cables for the power supply I have aren't long enough to reach the new motherboard power plug...the power supply is mounted at the bottom of the new case....and the new motherboard won't take DDR2 RAM... ;-)

So I've gotta pick up a new power supply....and new DDR3 RAM.... none of which is REALLY bothering my husband if he was aware enough to really think about it... because he's using the stuff I'm not going to use to build himself a gaming pc... ;-)

I'm running 2 Nvidia video cards in SLI mode - 8500GT - 512MB - they are a few years old - but from my limited knowledge - I don't really need super video cards for running photoshop/lightroom/etc - if someone has something different to say - please let me know! :-)

I'm looking at a couple power supplies - the biggest thing is that I need a newer power supply that is going to have longer power cables for the newer motherboard....I've got a 700Watt PS in the current case....I didn't think I 'needed' a larger one.... but once again....let me know what you think...maybe the new motherboard/cpu combo would do better with a larger power supply?

Option 1: went with this one primarily because it's the same brand as the case...$89.99

COOLER MASTER GX Series RS750-ACAAE3-US 750W ATX12V v2.31 SLI Ready

Option 2:
$144.99

CORSAIR HX Series CMPSU-750HX 750W ATX12V 2.3 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready

and a few sets of RAM - could you guys give me some input on what you think? Brad's got the flu....been in bed now since Christmas....which I must say royally sucks.... so I'm trying to order online for delivery so that I can have my pc back together Monday or Tuesday.

RAM options:

This is one option...I'd have to order 2 sets to get 8 GB.... but it's latency is 9... Brad has repeatedly said 'lower latency is better'....$52.99 for 4 GB... So $106 for 8 GB

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)

Option 2: 8 GB....but latency drops to 8...but it's $73 more....... $179.99...he's a gamer...so latency might not matter as much for a photographers pc as it does a gaming pc..

G.SKILL ECO 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL8D-8GBECO

and third option.... best value all around it seems....12GB.... for $159.99

CORSAIR XMS3 12GB (6 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333

What do you think?

Upgrade video cards?
Max out RAM?
Larger Power supply?...

Where do I spend my money for the most impact with running the stuff I want....which is primarily PS4 and LR

Thanks in advance...

Ram and throughput will yield the most in PS.

Lots of RAM, SSD drive for the program and you are off.

To Answer your question, yes keep both cards....they aren't the fastest ponies in the race.
get a solid PowerSupply (corsair) to keep everything happy. Don't read the wattage, read the current. The higher the number the better the PS.

It is a shame that your current PS won't work for the new one - it really is sufficient except for the cable length. But the Cooler Master one would again be sufficient. No need to spend the extra $50 or so.

On the RAM - I would get the Corsair just on name. The fact that it is a better value is even better. Plus it is MORE RAM and that is always good.

Use the video cards you already have... in fact, just one of them is probably enough for what you are doing. Your husband and his gaming will need more video power than you will.

RAM first, then disk space, but I think you already have enough RAM, but more is better.

You have enough to power up unless you are adding more drives

Some stores, like Fry's, sell plug extensions, might even find it online.

The RAM I have won't work with the new mobo - so I've got to buy new - wasn't sure what was recommended.

Are there an drawbacks to plug extensions for power supplies? That'd obviously be the easiest if it was an option....

Get a new PS......Solid PS like Corsair, I am not a fan of using the old. On the Ram, 8gb is fine, AMD chipsets need Pairs not Tri's. So get a matched pair like 2 4gb or 4 4gb. 8 GB will be fine, I am running it and I build with it too, my speeds are in the top.

A ssd drive will be the first thing I would do, it speeds the through-put for data, this is your greatest barrier.

Here is a link for Great Ram....
Newegg.com - CORSAIR XMS 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMX8GX3M2A1600C9

here is a link to a solid SSD Drive.
Newegg.com - Intel X25-M SSDSA2MH120G2K5 2.5" 120GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Oh...I miss that on the RAM.

No drawbacks on the extensions. Just make sure you tie wrap the extra wire. Here is the link to one of vendor who sells the cables.

What Brand and model is the old PS? You really want solid power to the x6.

There are several good power supply calculators out there, but 700w unless you run alot of peripherals. Since you are doing the research, here are some power supply calculators you can use.

I am a fan of this one also, it has silicone vibration reducers and flat cables.

Rich - picked up the suggested RAM
- frys had a $40 mail in rebate on it - so it ended up being $89.99 for the 8gb.

The power supplies suggested didn't have cables long enough... So I went with a thermaltake 750. It's got the flat cables and the main power cable for the mobo had enough length. I think that might be a design flaw... Or maybe a design implemented to make sure that you have to upgrade your PSU. ;-)

Anyway - putting it together tonight! I'll report back later! ;-)
