so my laptop needs to be "redone" I had too much stuff on it and I would like to wipe it clean....apparently there are different terms to that!!! I just want to take off the programs on it and start fresh, it is extremelly slow. I thought I had the windows xp disc with me but it isn't the professional version. I do have the code which is on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop. Do I have to have the disc to get to the screen to wipe it clean??? Is there another way??? | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. SIGN UP today and help support our community.

Did it come with a recovery disk? Or the ability to make a recovery disk? Probably is too late since the mfg usually asks that you make the recovery disk first thing before you load any programs. That way you can reinstall everything just like it came from the factory. Reason I ask is I have had laptops come both ways. One had a disk and the other I had to create on my own.

When it boots on the very first screen does it allow for recovery....usually like pres f11 for recovery. Otherwise is there a partition when you click my computer?

To get in the recovery section try ALT+F10 when it is booting up.

well I did the recovery thing...andgot a blue screen that says a problem has been detected and has to shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
run chkdsk/f to check for hard drive corruptionk, and then retart your computer. Now the interesting part is that i just got the dvd drive working. apparently there was a software issue and they fixed it. which is interesting as I don't have an f drive...I have a c and d which are memory drives and then e is the dvd drive. ????

Your drive might be partitioned into a c and d drive. F might be the recovery drive. Will it boot into Windows at all? If not, have you tried safe mode?

nope haven't tried safe mode. when I google chkdsk/f it tells me to go to the disk that is bad and right click..go to properties, go to tools and click on error checking. Have it automatically fix the errors. When I do that, it tells me it can't..I have to close windows and it will do it when it restarts. Well...it doesn't. : ( still can't reformat or defrag

Depending on what you want to use this computer for, you might just consider this. Peppermint | Linux OS

You can try a reformat from a CD.....but that would require a few things.....or send it my way.
