As someone who works in the field that article just makes me shake my head.... :(

Why? Imagine what they will do with that in the next 5 years. It will become smaller and more powerful. When coupled with a solid state drive I can envisage a time when something like an iPad will have as much power as what I'm working on now and have much less power consumption. If they can solve the portable power, memory, etc problems that is.

The whole thing that microprocessor vendors aren't using FPGA's because they are "too hard to program" is a joke. The guy doesn't know what he's talking about.

More cores in the future? Sure. But not through FPGA technology. FGPAs are for prototyping, not for high volume.
