Benchmark software? Testing pc? - 02-03-2011, 05:01 PM

Anyone familiar with a testing software to see how your pc is performing?

I'm running a fairly souped up system and I'm not seeing a huge difference between my six core and my four core....maybe I've adapted to it being faster...but I dont think so.

SO I wanna test it...

I have used this before, there are others that I will try to dig up and send you.

3DMark 11 | 3DMark 11 – The Gamer's Benchmark for DirectX 11

but, before you do this, is the software you are using written to run on a multi core system? Is your operating system 32bit or 64bit? Win7 ??

edit: - Here is the one I use most. http://www.passmark.com/products/pt.htm

What applications are you not seeing an improvement in? Did you install the 64bit version of those applications?

On One's Mask Pro.... Lightroom...

I have 64 bit versions installed.

I just want to check it - I'll try that and see what it says and let you know.

Unless your apps are thread enabled you will probably not see much performance differences between 4 and 6 cores, processor clocks will probably have more influence over a non threaded application.

Photoshop is pretty thread savy but, I don't know if the Onone software plugins are.

[I work for Intel but I swear this is not a plug] Some Intel processors have a feature caled turbo-boost which will overclock active cores if others are idle, this will often help with non threaded applications.

Threaded applications are programs written using a technique which will spawn parts of itself over multiple cores using more of the resources the CPU (amd sometimes GPU) has.

If you want a rough picture of your cpu core usage (in windows), bring up your task manager which will give you a rough picture of CPU utilization.

Having worked with computers for over twenty five years I am afraid that I have learned that benchmarks are pretty useless. At times they can tell you if a specific component has a pretty serious problem, but that is about it. I still carry a old P3 1GHZ laptop for a lot of things and although it is horrible in benchmarks it can usually power on, get the job done and shut down faster than most people can boot and launch the app. Just don't put a lot of faith in your benchmarks and instead worry about how it performs the tasks you need.

I can understand that - but because I put this pc together myself - and it is getting bogged down with some of the stuff i'm doing - i just want to make sure that its not a lack of knowledge that is the reason. The system - based on what I thought before getting the components - should run photoshop/lightroom easier and faster that my previous system. And it's not.

I can certainly understand that. What I might suggest instead of benchmarks is to see what all is running, what processes are using what threads, how your memory is being used, how your hard drive is performing during lightroom/photoshop and what the CPU load is for each core.

I posted up my results from my editing machine. IMO, your system is only as fast as the largest bottleneck. In your case your drive transfer rate is slow. Also, your graphics are antiquated compared to today's standards. Try a raid 0 or ssd drive to speed the throughput. I bet that your Mobo supports 6 gb/s transfers, make sure that you get a 6/gb drive.

Yes - mobo supports 6gb/s transfers.

I meant to say thanks for this - it told me what I needed. My pc isn't any faster than it was because my drives aren't any faster! ;-)

I'll upgrade those shortly! ;-)

WHOA!!! That's not true. Your machine may not be able to do disk activity faster so that may impact loading and saving, but most of your work is done with in memory images. And that activity IS affected by CPU Speed, optimized code, memory speed, etc.
