file sharing... - 03-07-2011, 10:39 AM

so my uploading speed stinks....usually up around 15 or 16 and I can barely get 10. The cable company said I have a file sharing program on one of the computers. I have the other two computers totally off, so only mine is on...and as far as I know (I do have little darlings) there has been no programs downloaded that share programs.....

any suggestions?

15 or 16 what? KB, MB? Or do you mean 1.5 or 1.6

Apple or PC? With a PC check the task manager to see which programs and processes are running. I (and I am sure others here) would be happy to parse the process list to see if any are malicioius or of a sharing personality :)

I wonder if an auto update is being downloaded in the background.

Its your backup software - 03-07-2011, 11:44 AM

Your wdsmartware is running in the background and using too much memory checking files. Turn it off and it should fix your issue.

Just curious, are you with Comcast?

If so, do you notice a speed increase at night compared to the daytime hours?
How can you check, Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test. It has been reliable for me when troubleshooting bandwidth issues.
If you are seeing a difference between your daytime and nighttime speeds, more than likely they are reallocating bandwidth from residential customers to their business customers. I see this when I'm working from home in the reduction in bandwidth and have complained to Comcast. They get an earful everytime I call as their CSR reps are crap.

no...I'm not with comcast...small company called Entouch and they have a website I can test. It's weird because it changes from 9 to 15 mbps within 5 minutes and I'm changing nothing on the computer. It's getting worse so I finally called and while I was checking the speeds, the guy said the speed would go all the way up and then go to zero like the computer was file sharing....so that's what he blamed it on. I know the kids' computer does frostwire, but I didn't think I had anything on mine....so I'm trying to decide if they are full of it, or there is really something on my computer.
