I have a brand new Macbook pro. Three weeks old. I have tried to download my photos from my Extreme Pro 90MB/s Sandisk card but the computer doesn't recognize the USB reader. If I change the card and I put a cheap CF card the coputer reads it without any problem. I have tried with both 8GB and 16GB CF cards. My pc and my older mac reads the high speed CF card but not the latest MacBook Pro.
I am wedding photographer and I use professional grade high speed CF cards. I think it is a bog joke if the Macbook "PRO" wouldn't read professional grade Cf cards.
I have tried everything. The macbook pro only likes the cheap cf cards. I guess the macbook is not rally a "PRO"!
I bought the coputer for destination weddings to back up and view photos after the wedding day but so far it is totally useless for me!!!
What's going on??? HELP!

Since you have a brand new MacBook Pro, have you considered contacting Apple Support? Can you be more specific on the exact brand of reader and cards you're using? I also have a brand new 2011 MacBook Pro and it reads my 8GB SanDisk Extreme IV cards just fine through my SanDisk FireWire 800 Extreme reader.

From the SanDisk Support site:
My Extreme Pro UHS-I Express card adapter won't show up or mount on my Mac, what's wrong?
NOTE: This is a known issue with Macbook Pro i7 processor running OS 10.6.6
There are occasional repots where the Extreme Pro UHS-I Express card adapter does not mount to the desktop of a Mac OS 10.6.6 on Macbook Pro with i7 processor.
Solution:
Insert the Extreme Pro UHS-I Express card adapter with a memory card inserted and reboot the computer. The card will be mounted upon reboot.

I have had a couple of issues even on my iMac and 13" MacBook Pro, when I plug my memory card into the FW800 reader, the OS wouldnt detect the card. At first I freaked out, but I then took the card out and plugged it back in. It then showed up on the desktop.
If you use both Aperture and Lightroom, having both open may be competing to import the images off the card, so it may not mount. <-- this sounds better in my head than the way it came out.

They told me to bring it in. they say I may have to leave the leave the computer at mac so they can look at it. I have a wedding coming up in the Bahamas so I need it. I will drop by today. I may have to buy cheap memory cards...

You still didn't list the exact models of the reader, cards, or computer. I get the feeling you are more interested in venting (which is OK) than getting help here. I seriously doubt it's just the cards, but more likely the combination of reader and card that is the issue with the new Mac. I currently own 6 Macintosh machines and have never seen this kind of problem.
Good luck with the solving the issue and it would be great to hear what the problem was.

You best bet is FW800 reader, the speed is so much better. A USB 2.0 reader max out around ~25MB, while a firewire ones get you close to that 90MB/s spec. I have plenty of those high performance cards, as well as Lexar Pro and also ExpressCard 34 reader, and the latter is even worst. It would crash my MBP and need reboot as soon as i plug in with any CF card in it.
Btw, i also have plenty of issues with cards not showing up on all the readers i got, it's common. Just plug and unplug till you got it. It's just a MAC, not as reliable as PC :)

FW-800 reader is available from the TPF Amazon Store: TexasPhotoForum.com: CE: Sandisk Extreme FireWire Reader
That's what I use...
