Question This can't be good. - 04-14-2011, 03:36 PM

I came home today a saw my monitor flicking. Over the past 30+ minutes the flicking has faded away and stopped. What's the prognosis?

My guess is that if it was a signal issue you would have the message floating around "No signal"

And since the others aren't flashing one can assume that it is the monitor. Can you lsolate the monitor on another computer/Laptop?

"It's dead, Jim"

That's the monitor going out.

Backlight (or backlight power supply) is failing, it's basically a flourecent tube (or several). On many they are replaceable. Not the end of the world.

My more logical guess is the backlight is fine. The inverter is dying. Here is my thinking, have you ever seen an inverter go out on a Florescent light? It flickers the same. There is an inverter that runs the back light too.

I know the monitor on the right flickers even worse when ever it's turned off for a few hours or over night. Check it out. When all this started back in October of 2010 I swapped this monitor with the monitor on the right.

Both of these (Dell UltraSharp 2005FPW) monitors are over six years old. Like I said earlier. They flicker but clear up after 20-30 minutes.

If it was a cable, the monitor should post up "unusable signal"

So: Unplug the cable, wait for the message and see if it flickers. If it does the monitor is bad and since I am usually right, fix the inverter/Backlight. [sarcasm]

DING, DING, DING, DING, DING! You sir are correct. After unplugging the DVI cable from the monitor, it continued to blink.

Now for the sad news. I've read the links you posted and um...I uh...I'm not so good with electronics. Plus my soldering skills are atrocious. Not sure what to do now. Maybe find a monitor repair shop and see how much they'll rape me.

Thanks for all your help Rich. You always come through.

You probably don't need to solder, now a days components are all plug and play. Pull the plugs on the old piece, plug in the new
