WinXP NB can't open Apple Time Capsule - 04-19-2011, 07:31 AM

O.K., here's the situation.

I have a Mac Mini, a Time Capsule (wireless router and 2 TB HD), a Vista PC and a WinXP notebook.
While the XP notebook will recognize the Apple devices in the network, it is unable to "open" them (dive into folder structure). It works well with the Vista PC, but not with the XP notebook.

Any help is much appreciated.

What version of XP - 04-20-2011, 03:50 AM

It should be XP service pack 3. If it is try this

try setting your WINS server to the ip address of your TC. This can be done by:

Click on the “Start” button;
Click on “Network Connections”;
Select your wireless network device; (or your wired network card if you are using an ethernet connection)
Click on the “Internet Protocol TCP/IP” Properties;
Click on the ‘Advanced” tab;
Then click on the “WINS” tab.
Enter IP address of your TC
Hit Ok, Ok, Ok.

Thanks, Steve. I tried it but nothing changed.
Do I have to fill in anything at the AirPort Utility (see below)?

I can't believe nobody had these problems before.

When you say that it recognizes the drive in the network do you mean that you can actually brows it there? Just asking because out of the box Time Capsules are formatted for MacOSX Extended, not NTFS or FAT32 (not calling you dumb or anything, just double checking)

ok did you happen to reboot both devices when you changed the Wins? if not go back and change then reboot computer first then TC. If still doesn't work take the password off the TC reboot pc and see if that works.

The WinXP machine can "see" the Time Capsule and the Mac Mini as network stations but it can't open it or map a drive letter to it.
The Vista machine can "see" the TC and the MM and it can actually open it, browse the shared folders, copy files etc.

I did it now but nothing changed. I can't take the password of the TC off, it won't let me do that ("A password is required ...").
