When the smoke detector goes off, it's too hot.....

seriously, I don't. In 20+ years of using laptops almost exclusively, I've never had or seen an issue with uproc heat. Unless of course your cat is sleeping on it.

I think I saw a window7 gadget that does that. I only have XP here at work or I'd take a look.

Well, one of my computers is in an area where it collects dust like an a/c filter. I took it out today and blew it out. I couldn't believe it was still running. The fins on the processor were highly clogged. I bet it is running 1000° cooler now.

Depends on the CPU for Op Tempurature, ALWAYS, when you get a cooler, get rid of the stock coolant compound and get some artic fox. This goes for older coolers too.

The CPU on my "heavy lifting" computer has a radiator, so it's not much of an issue.

There are some aftermarket temp control modules that fit into an empty slot in your case that will give you temp readings, let you control fan speed, etc.
You usually find them on hardcore gaming systems where an extra frame per second and a boot time that's comparable to a rocket launch make up for a lack of female companionship or unimpressive man parts.
