You prob don't have a virus, more like a Malware. There are many variants and you might have to bite the bullet and take it in. Try roll back the windows install and see if that helps.

Sounds like you both might have a rogue virus or malware.

You can Google for more information, but here is what I did.

You might have to start in Safe Mode.

Do a system restore to the day before you believe the virus hit.

After that, and if it works, download AVG free addition
AVG Free | Antivirus Download | Free Virus Protection

You should be able to run a scan.

If not, download the AVG program to another computer and move it to the infected one.

The malware or virus does not necessary come from the last site visited. It attacked while I was looking at my local newspaper website, but might have been hiding for days.

Most AV virus manufacturers provide tools to access using a rescue disk. I'd probably recommend Kaspersky.

Depending upon which OS (i.e. WinXP, Vista, Win7) you're running, your damage may vary. Be prepared to do a complete reinstall depending upon the extent of damage.

If possible, figure out what sites your kids went to, and employ parental controls so that they can't do this again.

If you cannot restore to a previous point, launch in Safe mode, create a new user and restrict the old user.

open windows with new user and immediately download MS Security essentials and AVAST. Since you are on a new user the defaults that the malware destroyed are on the old user. You will need to manually drag the docments folders to the new user.

If a disk format and reinstall is necessary it will be a huge pain....

Hopefully it is the same rogue virus that is going around, and does not damage the drive. Here is another link that might help

How to remove MS Removal Tool (MS Removal Tool Removal) | Malware Help. Org

I am only assuming you have what is called the MS Removal Tool rogue virus, or malware.

Nevertheless, the procedures above will help with any of them.

I get users who have downloaded the stupid rogue anti-virus malware programs from time to time. I use AVG Rescue disc, and then malware bytes to remove any of the leftovers.
