Mini Mac's - 06-25-2011, 02:10 PM

Does anyone have any expierence using Mini Macs? I bought a Ibook G4 a while back, but really would like something for desktop use. I dont have the 1,000-2,000 for the current ones, but see these on craigslist as well as brand new for about half of a Imac. I need it for some photo editing and surfing the net. The specs look good, but curious to hear from someone who might have used it. I alrady have a nice 21 inch LED flat screen for my out dated PC.

Cheaper option, the nitty gritty.*
Apple Portables: How to use your computer in closed clamshell (display closed) mode with an external display

I've had a Mac Mini for about five years for the grand sons to use. It is a Power PC chip and has performed flawlessly. It is -not familiar with the Intel version- a Mac that could boot headless, I.e., no screen. I think of them as a small desktop MacBook.*

A user website: *123Macmini.com - A Mac Mini User Community

*You are able to use your MacBook closed lid as a Desktop, plugging in a mouse, keyboard and screen with video adapter. A daughter has an iBook with a cracked non-functioning screen. She uses it at times as a desktop via the external keyboard/monitor route with the lid open. *

Don't know for certain but Mac Ally may have a dock but it is not needed

Ive got one of the older 13inch macbooks, aluminum body,
it has gotten rained on from a downpour through my camper window, (raining sideways)
and I spilt a glass of captain and coke, on it, and ive got stickie-keys,,,grr,

I use it to do my photo work with a Dell 2209WA monitor,

ive backed everything up on three drives,,,
and got myself the wireless keyboard,
I know its just a matter of time untill it gives up the majik smoke,
when it does im getting the Mac-Mini,,as it is almost the same config/power/chip as my laptop and i have no trouble doing my pictures,

The best source for information on low end Macs is, of course, LowEndMac.com.

I would not invest in a non-Intel Mac at this time. The PPC is on the brink of extinction as far as MacOS and applications are concerned. Of course, YMMV.
