New 15" MacBook Pro vs old Mac Pro - 07-15-2011, 10:56 AM

I have an older 2.6 dual core tower but sometimes could benefit from a portable machine with tethered shooting capabilities. Is anyone familiar with the performance difference between the new 15" 2.2 quad core MBP with max ram vs my old MP 2.6 dual core with 10 gb of ram?

In the world of Still Photography ... the New 15" MacBook Pro and heck even the one right before this new one ... are great. The new i5/i7 processor are really quick for processing.

When it comes to Video though ... I would rather have the MacPro. Because video demands so much more from Ram and the sticks of Ram on the MacPro just has faster BUS speeds than the MacBookPro ... not to say you can't do video on the portables, just in the pro-realm of things the MacPro is better for video.

Ya, I'm a photographer (product and architecture), no video.

But are you saying the old Mac pro is faster than the new MacBook pro?

The current i5/i7 quad core (and even the previous dual core i5/i7) will have better performance than a MacPro with an older Core Duo processor.

The new MBPs are definitely faster than older MacPros. We made a significant jump recently in tech, and the Pros just do not have the oomph that can hang with that.

I work exclusively on a MBP now and love the flexibility to be mobile, tethered shooting in the field, kicks ass.

I own two Mac Pro towers. One dual dual @ 2.66 and one dual quad @ 3.0. I also own a new 15" MBP core i7 @ 2.2. The Mac Pros have 8 & 16 GB of RAM and the MBP has 4. In straight benchmarks, the 8 core Xenon @ 3.0 is faster, but only by a fraction. Bus speed is much faster on the MBP, so I'd give it the edge driving an external display. I will eventually upgrade one tower and turn the 2.66 machine into a Lion server with 8TB of storage.

Have fun!!!

Is there any way for the MBP to run two displays?
I have a Cintiq for working on and an NEC for accurate color.

Until Thunderbolt gets out, that's your only real option for two displays.

I won't be using the apple displays.
Looks like I'll have to go with the Matrox setup.

What's interesting though is the Promise Pegasus Raid... screaming fast but wowzer... a cool $1k.
