Need help with NAS backup solution. - 08-08-2011, 06:57 AM

I have a new Macbook Pro that I'm trying to backup to a Synology DS411j with four bays. 2tb drive in each bay.
The MBP has an SSD drive for the OS, Apps, music, etc.
Then I swapped out the optical cd drive for the stock 500gb mechanical hd that has my working files on it.

So my plan was create a couple volumes on the NAS (setup as Synology Hybrid Raid), backing up the ssd drive to one volume and my working files to another volume. Plus i have some other old no-longer-working files i need to backup just as storage.

What would be the best way to set this up?
I already set up the ssd to backup to one of the two volumes using Time Machine.
But now how do i get my working files backed up to the other volume? I thought the NAS would show up on my mac as another "volume" just like any other external hard drive but that doesn't seem to be the case. So my other backup software like Super Duper doesn't see it.

Or is there a completely different way I need to go about this? Like not having separate volumes on the NAS? But how do I tell the NAS to backup two separate hard drives?

The Synology is cool as it can be a media station, surveillance station, photo station, ftp, is built to work natively with Time Machine, I can access it from anywhere, etc... but the main thing is it has to be a backup for me and that's the part I'm having trouble figuring out.

I'm not an expert at this, but your Mac should see the NAS as another computer, not an external hard drive. Look for it in your network. The NAS should have mgr software to set up your routine backups, from any computer on your network.

THe Nas should show up as another computer and the drive is a drive in that computer. I am not that familiar with MAC, but I know in Windows you Map the drive and assign is a drive letter.

If there are partitions in the NAS those will be separate drives
