Ok heres what is going to happen, I am replacing my HD, adding more memory and upgrading to win 7 64 bit.
Heres the part I am not too sure of.
Next do I format the HD first then load the OS, Or do I load the OS then format the drive.
If I format the HD first, how is that done? or will the OS want to format the HD when I first install the disk.
Thanks

When you say upgrading, do you mean loading windows over the previous install or on the new drive?

are you installing on a new drive or over the previous install?

a: If on the new drive, set your bios to boot from the CD/DVD First then you will see a message that says "press any key to boot from CD" follow the prompts

b: if you install over a previous install, windows will put the old install and create a directory called windows.old. This is good because you can retrieve the old data from your user file.

Win 7 will properly format a new (clean) drive, so no need to worry.

Win 7 loads differently on an unformatted drive vs. a formatted drive. If you change you bios to boot off the DVD and let the install disc find your unformatted drive, it will build a restore partition, same as you see on pre-built oem systems. If you format the drive first, then install it, Win 7 will install without building the restore partition.

Choice is yours. :-)

Don't forget to hit Up Up Down Down L,R,L,R,B,A start at the bios screen to boot from CD. Otherwise you will get an Error.

(Actually usually you hit F8 to select boot device)

Wooo Hooo !!! so far so good, win 7/64 installed with not a glitch......knock on wood. Did the first round of updates. found 41. installed them, then needed to hit the sack. 3:30 come aweful early.
The HDD I installed, a Samsung F3 1TB spinpoint, seems a bunch faster then the WD blue cavier, and a bit more quiet.

You should have at least 5 rounds of updates. While the initial ones run, download the full SP1 client for win 7. At this point I would have anything installed, so if things go bad you can reformat and reload fresh.
