I discovered that recently when I went to buy a new drive for my sports photos. No choice but to pay the extra. And that is what the salesman told me at that time. I had read about it earlier but didn't think I was going to need one so soon. UGH.

supposedly some Japan mfg issue related to the tsunami + decreased US$ valuation + increased value of Chinese currency for some parts.

Perfect storm.

In the case of hard drives it's primarily the flooding in Tawain that wiped out most of the manufacturing capability for the big HD makers.

It really sucks, I was gonna upgrade my RAID array but at these prices buying 4 new hard drives is out of the question.

But with services like Dropbox, do we really need another HDD?

Shhhh, it is because SSD's aren't made like HDD. They have actually gone down in price.

because they are not yet a commodity, they are still in the early technology stages where mfg yields and capacity are rapidly increasing and lowering costs. HDD are 'commodity' where the cost differentials between makers is largely moot and the technology is painfully mature.
