apple vs dell vs??? - 02-05-2012, 09:08 AM

i started college, all the cs5 stuff is tought on apple..i use to think my photos were comming out good untill i looked at them on a desk top vs a lap top.

is one desk top better than the rest?? putting all personal prejudice aside

does one computer have a better picture than the other to get the best what you see is what you get??

exactly the same, calibrated monitor is much more important.

Laptop screens are terrible for viewing vs. a desktop monitor. Viewing angle very much plays more of a factor in image in a laptop than desktop. Calibrated or not.

CS5 doesn't care if it's on a Mac or PC. Once you launch the program all things are essentially equal. Monitor quality and calibration affects picture quality.

You can make any desktop what you want it to be. The image comes down to the monitor and calibration. Apple does tend to have great monitors, but like everything, you can find something comparable for a PC.

For the class, if what they teach on is Mac, then it would probably be easier to just use a Mac...though more expensive.

From a laptop standpoint, Apple's screens are pretty decent for phioto editing. They're sharp, and fairly accurate from a color fidelity standpoint. Lenovo has a laptop line that's geared towards photographers.

I use an Apple MacPro but use two HP2475w monitors.

What John said.

Desktop if you want more power (and by power, that depends on the specs you source if you are going to build a machine yourself).

Laptops if you want to be mobile.

Apple machines, and Dell machines are both great, and can last you a long time, assuming you take good care of them.

It's really down to which OS you like. Do you like OSX or Windows 7 (or whatever version).

I say, decide on an OS and then choose if you want a desktop or laptop.

HP also produces some workstation-class laptops with optional "DreamColor" IPS displays. They are available on the 8560w (15") and 8760w (17"). Also some of the Envy models have IPS screens as well, though I am unsure of their specs. If I had $3k to drop on a new laptop, the 8560w would be at the top of my list. I do, however, work for HP, so I am not totally unbiased. I am sure Dell has some nice units out there, too, but I'll never know.

I loath HP laptops...they run very hot and tend to have issues.

My Compaq melted the power contacts on the board, but I think we got it 6 yeas ago or so. The last 3 HPs I have used have run nice and cool.

Compaq and HP are the same company. There are usually Compaqs that are the same model as HP's only with a compaq name. IE the HP DV9000 is also a Compaq 3000I.

if you want quality parts you either pay the big bucks to a high end maker (Falcon Northwest, Origin, etc) or build it yourself.

your monitor is super important here, I highly recommend a IPS over a TN if you are going for a thing monitor. I am partial to CRTs myself, and the words to look for are "Reference monitor"
