Seagate External HD - 08-26-2006, 09:54 AM

I've been thinking about removing the drive from my Seagate external case and put it inside one of my computers. Has anyone ever done this and can you tell me if it's a SATA drive or IDE?

Thanks...

A little more information on the drive would be helpful, but it is most likely IDE. Also what kind of computer is it?

PATA drive

SATA drive

and they all look the same....
why not just remove the case and check it for yourself?

i don't know if you can tell, you best bet is talking to Seagate.

The interface for estat or pata still doesn't tell if the drive inside is sata or IDE. It could be just a converted interface for ended user.

check out the ports on the back..
if it's SATA...then it's a SATA drive
if it's USB/Firewire...then it's a PATA drive

I have the latter one on my desk...

wether it is sata or pata, it will go inside your computer case. Just make sure you have the appropriate controller connection available on the inside.

I did this with an old ATA 100 external drive. I ended up removing it because i bought another hard drive that was bigger.

Recently, I have been buying 80GB hard drives online, installing them in my external drive chasis, backing up photos/files to the hard drive, labelling the drive with what I put on it, then storing the drive back in the box in my closet. Coupled with DVD backups of files, I like to think of this method as working for me until i can afford a RAID setup :)

Put Belarc Advisor on your computer and it will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about your computer and then some. It's free. http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html.
Enjoy!

If the driver was bought in the past 7 years I'll bet you $20 is IDE.
