Newegg's pretty good about shipping speed, thankfully. The wait should not be interminable.

Maybe there was a typo up there somewhere. There's on only one processor.

Michael, looks like you will have a pretty good system when you are done.

only thing I would suggest is getting another HD or 2. and set your system up like this.

80gig sata drive for your OS and programs and use the 750gig as your "data" drive for all your photos. Then add another drive as a backup drive. That way if either drive fails you only have to worry about what was on that drive and not ALL your stuff.

DVD formats are changing soon with BlueRay and HD-DVD formats becoming more available lately.

I am upgrading an old system on a tight budget , my old AMD 2500+ just didn't keep up with me any more with 100+ mb files. The Intel motherboard revision 3.04 or newer seems to be the best one according to some test I read but it is around $229. I went with a Gigabyte GA-945P-S3 because it is a high performance board for the Intel Core 2 Duo Processor and the cost is just under $100. E6600 Intel Core 2 Duo CPU. I went with a GeForce 7600GT, acording to a report this was the best video card under $200, with 256MB GDDR3. 2 gigs of of the latest Ram. Thermaltake power supply.

The 4 core is suposed to be even a greater leap in performance than the core 2 duo but I need to upgrade now.

This looks like the hottest processor out there right now. At least for the next 30 seconds or so.

or

I'm not sure which is the better way to go. The first processor supports hyper-threading where this one doesn't.
No Pentium 4 can compete with the Core 2. Don't buy a dead obsolete architecture. Buy the Core 2.

And make sure that the motherboard you buy is Core 2 compatible. Not all LGA775 boards are automatically compatible.

Or wait for 30 days and buy the new AMD 4X4 that's coming out Nov 15th-16th, and get 4 cores at 3Ghz for about $1000. The 4X4 motherboards will have 2 PCI-E 16X slots, and 2 PCI-E 8X slots, that can all run graphics cards in a quad SLI arrangement (when using nvidia cards)

*Edit* Read further in the thread and I see you did go with the Core 2 which is good.*

I might be wrong but it was my understanding that the Core 2 Duo (dual processors on a single chip) Extremes are hyperthreaded, or at least the new version of hyperthreaded. That's what differentiates the "Extreme" from the non-Extreme Core 2 Duos. Not bad, 2 real processors and 4 virtual processors on a single chip!

Well, I checked the apple.com and local store Microcenter, and they all state there are 2 processors in their ad. "Two 2.66GHz Dual-Core" is the exact phrase in their spec. I don't know how much typo it could be.

There's not a typo, the Mac Pro's have 4 cores, in two chips. Have since their introduction, though not in the lowest model at that time. I believe they all do now, haven't checked.
