ok, i need another computer. i'd like a laptop so i can edit remotely or in another locale of my place...lol.

the computer will be a dedicated editing station-- i will only store photos i am editing (they will not be stored afterward on this computer) and i will need to run CS2 (eventually CS3).

let's pretend for a moment that budget is limitless.

This has been discussed in many threads here on the forum. You might try typing in the keywords laptop processing or other such words in the forums search function to read already posted information.

If i ever get another laptop it will be Tablet PC of some sort. I have one they let me use @ work and it is so awesome for photoshop simply because the screen is a tablet. As far as price goes, they are not that much more expensive than a normal laptop. If you have not looked at any Newegg has a few to choose from, great company to deal with in my experience.

Photography does not make me money, but its my escape from life and that is priceless.

PC or MAC?

You need the basics: Min 2gb mem, 2+ ghz, 100mb hard drive.

One thing that most people think they need is a fancy video card, but photoshop (with the exception of the new enhanced version) is 2D graphics, you don't really need HIGH END for that.

What you do need is a good LCD. High end Asus have really nice screens.
To see what a bad screen is look at this:
Picture from Dell and HP comparison

Budget no object?
Specifications
Apple $3,800.00
2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB 667 DDR2 - 2x2GB SO-DIMMs
160GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm
SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
MacBook Pro 17-inch High-Resolution Widescreen Display
Backlit Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English

Asus W2
Asus/Lamborghini VX2-AK00xG Ensemble Notebook Series

Dell makes one with a 20" screen, starts at about $3,000 and gots up over $7,000

I found this thread very helpful:
http://www.texasphotoforum.com/forum...ad.php?t=48516

but was kind of fishing for comparisons now that mac's newer powerbook pro's are available.

we just got an apple store in the mall and i stopped by to take a look at them today. i currently run PC but am definitely open to mac as far as workflow/post-processing.

I am a PC user but have used MACs over the last year and I have a few observations for you. I thought about getting an Apple tower last year.
  • Since Windows XP I have had fewer problems with USB drives (hard drives and thumb drives) on PC then on MACs, by a loonnngggg way. Including freezing systems and lost data. I didn't realize the Apples had the Spinning beach ball.
  • When I thought about replacing my software I realized it would be more than the cost of the machine.
  • I wanted to configure a machine with 5 hard drives, 1 for the OS and 4 dirves in a mirrored stripped array.

this is not intented to start anything, 2 of the 3 were me specific and the other I was very surprised about.

Simple -

The most expensive one you can afford. Get the most ram, fastest processor(s), and latest video card.
