hard drive problems - 06-25-2007, 05:20 PM

Hi everyone

I have a problem .... last weekend my external Maxtor hard drive was connected to a 24 volt lead instead of a 12 volt lead and fried the power supply. I have thousands of ours of work on that drive and a lot of images that I didn't backup... (I'm kicking myself so hard!!)

I took the hard drive to fry's and a technician took the casing off and checked it out ... he said he would try and retrieve the files for me... but when he connected the circuit board to his computer the computer powered down.... he told me that he had never seen that happen and he didn't know what else he could do he also said that the best thing for me to do is..... search the net and find a company that would basically operate on the hard drive and rebuild it........... does anyone have any suggestions ....

I would be very grateful
Hayley

how comfy are you with taking things apart?

you may be able to retreive the data your self.

if the tech at frys connected the external drive circuit card to their PC and it messed up, then the problem is with the circuit card, and maybe the Hard drive is ok.

but there are other ways to do this.

remove the drive from the enclosure.

use a gizmo like this (frys has them as well)

I have one and love it. you can connect to ANY type of bare hard drive, power it up and get the data.

if this wont work, then you need a data recovery specialist.

I would try those adapters first. A recovery company will charge you between $1000 and $3000 depending on the size of the drive.

It might be that you can install the harddrive in a new external enclosure and it works fine.

Just a thought.

Hayley,

I'd start by removing the drive itself and either put it in an external housing or in a computer and see if it powers up. If it does, chances are that everything is fine and you can just copy the files over to back them up. If the drive is dead and won't power up, then it's time to panic and break the piggy bank;)

Best regards,
