External HD Enclosure - Advice/Help... - 12-22-2007, 10:03 PM

I have no idea why this is so hard for me to find but I'm looking for...

An external HD exclosure that houses 3-5 hard drives (that I install, doesn't have to be hot-swap but no prob if it does) uses either SATA or Firewire 800 and runs each HD independantly (ie. No RAID).

Does anything like this exist?

TIA,

Not sure. You might check Dell's site for the power vault series. I think they're stand-alone storage deals.

Sure, they're all over the place. The first that comes to mind is LaCie. Check Fry's (outpost.com) or newegg.com. They'll more than likely be advertised as RAID enclosures, but so what? The don't have to be if you don't configure them that way.

I guess my dumb question for you is why do you want to have 3-5 drives in an enclosure (assuming you're going for mega drive space) when external Firewire drives in the 500GB-1TB range are way less than $500? I've seen a few 500giggers for less than $200 recently. Not long ago I bought a 400gb Seagate Firewire for $120...

Here is what I use for an enclosure.... I like the fact I can daisy chain them if I want more than one drive attached to my machine, but only use one firewire port.

keeping an eye on this thread. I have ext drives littering my office, and would like an economical way to consolidate them.

Nice links Jesus. I'm not in the market, but it's always good to know where to look when the need arises.

Heck Frys has 500gb drives less than $100 this weekend. Couple that with an enclosure (I have 5 of them Venus brand is what I use). Half a terrabyte for under $150.

Ah, I do have LaCie's, 4 in fact and I'm not thrilled with any of them. One's dead and the performance on the others (firewire 800) is suspect. I'm done with LaCie's storage solutions.

And buying RAID enclosures does NOT guarentee you can configure them otherwise (I found this out the hard way). It must indicate that you can configure the drives independantly.

And for me, a single enclosure is more convienent. It's just where I want to go with my backup solution.
