I have a chance to buy a iMac with 17 inch screen, 2GHz Intel dual core, 1GHz ram, DVD writable drive, and 149GB hard drive..
This computer is clean and working withno damage.
What would be a fair price to pay??

I would check with eBay over the next several days.....
That would seem the best place to judge the "Current Market Value"

I recently paid (November) $1899 for an open box 17 inch at Best Buy. Specs were 2.5Ghz CPU (6Mb cache vs. 2.4 with 3Mb), 512 8600GT Video card, 2 Gig of ram and a 250Gig hard drive. You can still get that same deal for about $2099 new. Mine was flawless and I can register it and purchase Applecare as well.
I wouldn't pay more than $1000 for it. You can get a new 15" (previous model) for $1599-$1699.

Mike, I think you are confusing the MBP with the imac.
A 17" imac at 1.83 with a gig a ram cost about 899 new. I think the pricing is education only though.

Woops. You are correct. I need to read. I saw 17 and assumed it was a Macbook Pro.

I agree - check ebay to see the going price. Be sure to look at the completed auctions to see what they have recently sold for.
Personally, I'd expect to pay in the 500.00-600.00 range for the machine you mentioned.
Things to consider that can influence the value of a pre-owned Apple:
Does it come with the full retail packaging? Is the original software media included? What version of OS X is included, and will to need to plan to purchase an upgrade?
Does it have include mouse, keyboard, and Apple remote?
Does it include Apple Care, or is it still under the original warranty (making it eligible for you to purchase Apple Care)?
For a system with 1 GB, are all the memory slots full? If so, it will cost you somewhat more to upgrade the memory that it would if there is a free memory slot. You will most likely want more than 1 GB in this machine if you plan to do image processing.

After taking a closer look at the computer I decided to pass. He wants $900 for just the computer without keyboard, mouse, and OS.
I will be selling mine with the same specs + software etc to upgrade to a Mac Pro..

Sweet! I have an early 2007 Mac Pro that I love. I've used it longer than any other computer I've ever had, with the exception of my original Apple //. Quote:
