I just got a new Macbook Pro. It's the previous-gen 2.5Ghz 15.4" matte screen model.
It's my first mac and coming from PC all my life, it's taking some getting used to, but I'm catching on pretty quickly. It's so ergonomic and user-friendly. I'm still setting it up the way I want, importing albums and video/music libraries and such.
But I just had to post a quick "OMFG" rant... These things are amazing. | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. SIGN UP today and help support our community.

Does anybody know how to change the user name in finder?
Right now it has the name I entered on startup: s-man23. I want it to say my name or something else.
How do I change this? I looked in all kinds of system preferences etc. Can't find it.
Help? | | | |

If you will go to users in finder and click on the name you want to change, it should highlight it and just enter the name you prefer.

I would suggest that you use the Systems Preference application and select the Accounts applet. You can change the name there easily.

I guess I'm "doing it wrong"...
When I'm in Finder, the bar on the left under the heading "places", there's "desktop" "s-man23" "applications" and "documents". I want to change "s-man" to something else.
If I could go into my original setup cycle I think I could find where I messed it up...

That's ya user short name or home directory name, i don't know if that's a quicker way to do it, you can't simply change it over system preference.
Try this, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1428

To change your Hard Drive's Name:
Go to "System Preferences" then go to "Accounts" Look under "Name".....
To change your Computer's Name:
Go to "System Preferences" then go to "Sharing" Look under "Computer Name".....

Try this, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1428 | This is the correct procedure.
It's often easier to just create a new account and abandon the old one.

Congrats!!!
Be sure to run in the Terminal (same as the C prompt in DOS for Windows) sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
if you do not leave the machine on overnight. If you run this, ensure you wait until the script message says "complete."
This is the optimization/maintenance script and it will keep your machine wel oiled and running like a top. Macs run this scheduled maintenance in the background overnight when most are not using their machines; unfortunately, most do not leave their machines in conscious mode over night. If you put your machine to sleep, or turn off, it doesn't run.

For those not interested in using the unix command line, there are several freeware utilities that will do the same for you. I prefer to use 'cocktail', but there are others that perform the same task.

Understood and he makes a good point; however, using the Terminal is quite simple and once you add the Terminal icon to your apps task bar, you can launch it quick, type in the command and be done in a heartbeat vs loading additional software.
Regarding additional software and maintenace for the Mac, as a matter of speaking, I think that you probably should look into some hard drive maintenance items such as Disk Genius, Tech Tools, or Drive Wizard. These cost money, but are supposed to be really good at keeping your hard drives clean of any corruption causing elements over time. I am still reviewing the benefits of buying this stuff over using Disk Utility since Disk Utility has a verify and repair function for all drives detected.
I am a big advocate of not loading on the computer anything unneeded to keep as much RAM and CPU load free as possible for what I really need. Quote:
