SSD for Mac - they are lightening fast for PS users - 02-04-2009, 09:28 AM

This is more for the Macbook Pro field...

For those using intensive machine dependent programs like LR and PS, you may want to spend the extra dolalrs on a SSD (solid-state drive) which is like a superchaged flash drive which replaces the hard drives we have all used for years.

I have seen some figures from those that are always trying new items and they are showing this is almost instant response time for reading and writing for the hard drive. This would really help photographers with big files working remotely.

Yeah, a 256GB drive is around $1,000, but that will decrease soon (as all technology does), so save your money and by June, perhaps they will have 500GB SSDs for that much and that will be well worth the dough for those int the field with their MBs.

Actually it's for every manufacture...not just the MacBook Pro. Dell has been offering SSD for over a year and a half. When I was shopping for my laptop, they offered a 32GB SSD upgrade for $1,200 smackers. O_O

I do like what the SSD has to offer!

Too early for SSD, for the price it'd make more sense to add more memory to your Mac or PC if you want to boost your computer's peformance, or buy faster hard-drive to replace your boot drive.

Not to bash Macs, but Mac are also overpriced compared to an equivalent PC built.

SSD will make the BIGGEST difference in PS AI type of work as primary scratch disk.

Agreed that SSD as a primary scratch disk is the cat's meow but the 10K Velociraptors are a pretty good option for far less jackage. YMMV of course.. Sorry just realized the OP was discussing MBP options so my post really isn't correct or helpful.

I'm glad you said it, but agree 100% (plus the 200% markup Apple adds). I did the Mac thing for a whole year and was very disappointed. Immediately went back to PC.
