Seagate Barracuda
WD Caviar Black
WD Caviar Green
Hitachi Deskstar

I need one... I've been happy with Seagate, but with all the flack over the firmware issues with them, I could go with WD.

Opinions?

I just went Seagate, again! Nothing but Seagate in my Mac Pro (4) and no issues.
Seagate has a bigger buffer and the longer warranty.
I have only read of the problem, and am yet to hear directly from anyone who has had the problem.
I had no qualms with just buying Seagate again in an external enclosure.

Western Digital hands down. I have raptor drives for the system and a slew of WD 1TB drives for data. Black seems to be a better performer but Green is a good choice if you've got multiple drives in your case that you don't access often (ie. I wouldn't use one for my system disk).

I've had one WD go bad on me in the last 10 years.

This "argument" is just as bad as Canon vs Nikon, Chevy vs Ford, & Mac vs PC.

There will not be a clear cut general consensus favorite.

As for me, I've used them all. Maxtors, Seagates, and Western Digitals. Never had one die on me either. Just find the one right for you and all should be good. Good luck sir.

I looked at the Caviar Black and Barracuda and to be honest with you, it's pretty much same-same. I have two other Barracudas in the Mac Pro, so I picked up two more of those. Besides, Fry's had a limit of one on the WD.

It's time to clone and move data...

OBE, but anyway... Having been a long-time Seagate fan, I must admit that the last four drives I've bought have been WD Caviar Blacks, and I've been very happy with them.

I've given up on all brands except WD; the others seem to have too many problems. The WD's are fast, reliable, quiet, and don't run too hot.

Seagate for me,(so far no issues with the last 4 purchased and been about 3 years) had a WD go bad in just over 8 months use.
