I didn't even know they had a 500 to be honest. I have the 250g and I love it. It's a great little drive so I'm sure you'll be happy once you finally get it. Best of luck.

Why not buy the $250 and replace the drive inside with:

Seagate Momentus 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0 or Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb

I have a 500 gig. I got it because it was 500 gig with a firewire 800 connection. It is very portable and fast. It does not require external power. I use it on my Macbook Pro 17".

If this is the reason you bought it I don't know of a good alternative that has firewire 800 and no external power requirement at 500 gig.

They are sold out everywhere but I have no idea why. All sites say it's a 1 to 2 month wait.

It's sold out because it's good and unique. You convinced me that I want one.

I wouldn't do a replacement on a Rugged. It voids the warranty. I would buy a dedicated external housing and find the HD you want to put inside it. I just don't know if there are any out there that don't require separate power and that are firewire 800.

The Apple store near me (but not near you) had at least one of the 500s in stock they were trying to sell me.
