Calibration across *screens* - 03-11-2009, 05:55 PM

I've been reading through various threads, and the links posted within those threads, on calibrating screens. So far I've not come up with a real answer to my question, so I'm going to ask!

I have a 20" LCD I do some of my work on when I'm at my desk, and then the newly replaced panel on my 15" Macbook Pro. They both display the same images quite differently, and I'd like to fix that - or at least bring them closer together so I can actually use both for processing. Do I just need to get a Colormunki or something simiarl and calibrate both in the same lighting, or??

Eventually making sure colors displayed on the screen, and those that come out after printing is the goal - but right now I just need to make sure what I see on screen A is seen the same (or really close to the same) on screen B.

I have a spyder 2 that I use on my Macs and am pretty happy with how it works out.

I'm sure you could try and mess with color/contrast/brightness and do it that way but you wouldn't have a "correct" image at that point and would take some time.

I believe you have to have a video card that supports separate color profiles for each LUN too.. Can't recall off the top of my head if the Macbook Pro supports that or not. I own one, but do not use it for editing. I typically use a PC with two Dell monitors.

BTW: I use a Spyder Pro 3 and like it a lot.

I just bought a the Spyder3 Pro, the card in the MBP supports separate profiles. I should have it Monday.

Never trust a laptop/notebook/netbook display for accurate color representation unless you can keep your viewing angle within a few degrees of the same every time. Contrast and color shifts will occur with every ultra thin LCD notebook display. Try it yourself and it should be very easy to see.

Now with that said, you still should be able to view (not edit) your images nicely on a calibrated notebook LCD. I just won't use one to do any color critical editing. YMMV.

This is definitely part of the reason I want both screens calibrated. The viewing angles remain constant at my desk, but calibration should get me where I want to be.

It should, but it doesn't. Both screens are calibrated - both screens produce images that are quite different. There are no viewing angles at which the results are even acceptably similar. That'll make things interesting for me...

I don't think a colormunki will do more than one monitor.

Actually, they will - as will the Spyder3 Pro - the problem is that despite both being calibrated, they're still quite different in terms of both overall brightness (in highlights) and saturation (specifically in blues).

I've taken the laptop and my 2007FP to work where we have several Apple Cinema Displays and an Ezio at the photo editing station. Calibrated, the 2007FP displays identical colors to everything else - but the integral screen on the MBP does not. That's quite frustrating (and totally unacceptable).
