I have a Sandisk USB 2.0 and a Microtech Firewire Cardreader.
I decided to do a test on them and my results were based on a Sandisk Extreme IV 4GB Card that was completely full with Raw Images from a Canon 5D DSLR. The Firewire Cardreader beat the USB 2.0 Cardreader by 20 seconds..... LOL

Firewire Cardreader = $60.oo
USB 2.0 Cardreader = $20.oo

I'd say, first see if u have firewire slots available on two or more of your machines, if it is I'd say it's worth the money, but of course if the cardreader have dual-interface it'd be even better.

For me I only have firewire on my laptop so I feel reluctant of getting one, plus I have internal cardreaders on my desktop and speed is not really an issue to me...

I have both. The issue is getting a Firewire 800 reader to work with my PC laptop without spending a small fortune. I tried a 9pin to 4 pin cable, but since the 4 pin does not provide power it was useless. It was cheaper just to buy the USB 2.0 Lexar reader. If you have an Apple laptop, I have a Lexar FireWire 800 reared sitting around.
