I'm in the market for a new monitor... - 05-09-2009, 03:00 PM

any advice?? I'm wanting a much bigger monitor than what I currently have, a 19" laptop....of course it's going to go with my desktop but it'll be incentive to work in the office as opposed to in my room on the bed, where it's not too comfy. Anyway, I think I want one of those high gamut monitors but I was wondering what type of input I could get on here, recommendations and the such?
thanks

I won't be making any specific brand recommendations.
You generally get what you pay for with monitors. It is generally agreed that CRT's are best for photographic work, but you won't find them on the market without a serious search.
So, my advice is to get something that costs at least $1500 and has controllability to be able to use a calibration tool on.
Cheap monitors are OK for office use, and to see email, you tube, etc. but if you want to be able to calibrate and get the best images for printing, you will need a superior monitor.

I lied. here's a link to some good monitors just for a starting point.

Tom, thanks! Lacie sounds familiar, I think my husband has been looking at those recently. Those are LCD though, you mention CRT as the best for photo work?
thanks.

CRT's are the old monitors that were about a foot and a half deep, and needed their own desk to sit on....
Everyone is going to the LCD monitors, and they are really good, but a bit pricey.
If you can find an old CRT that is in good shape, and is good quality, you can use it if you have the desk space.
Monitor choice is like photo equipment choices. Nikon vs. Canon cameras, Epson vs. Canon printers, Sony vs. LaCie monitors, Think Tank vs. Tamrac bags, Ford vs. Chevy,, etc.

EIZO is considered an elite monitor, but the Coloredge CG monitors are $2k and up for 24" and larger. These are considered the best for color calibration.

I don't agree with this generalization. Perhaps a year or two ago this was the case, but now I think technology has made this no longer true.

Notice that I didn't mention cost. It will cost considerably more for a LCD that will give the same performance that a CRT has, but that's another subject.
