Creativity Exercise #8: Cheap Lens Challenge - 12-15-2005, 09:43 PM

Creativity Exercise #8: Cheap Lens Challenge

Well, the last creativity exercise kinda bombed, but I'm not deterred so easily. I will press on and force y'all to be more creative if its the last thing I do!

Anyway, I want everyone to reach deep into their camera bag and attach the cheapest/crappiest lens they own to their camera and go shooting. That's right, I don't care what kind of lens it is (lensbaby, pinhole, Russian fisheye, kit lens...whatever), but pretend its your only tool. Force yourself the come up with new ways to showcase your lens' strengths and weaknesses.

Rules:

1. Any photo equipment you want to use is legal.

2. Basic photo editing only (same as in the previous exercises).

3. Each participant can post up to 3 of their favorite shots.

Next Exercise: 12-30-2005

I used to have a Pentax K mount 135mm lens that had broken aperature blades.. there was oil running around inside the lens and the blades sometimes stuck if you shot at anything other than wide open.... it was quite a challenging piece of equipment. LOL

I think the cheapest lens I have right now is the kit lens that came with my Canon Rebel X.... I'll have to dig it out.

when you say "Basic Edit" Does that mean we can change the color of the Photo? Or do we have to leave the color in tact? Reason I asked was because I came up with this.....

I changed the color balance and cropped it but other then that it is the stock lens that came with the Digital Rebel D300. 18-55mm

OOPS! I just read the rules.......Sorry. Disregard My Post

Took this one a couple of nights ago out front of my office. About a 20-second exposure with a 20D and the "frugal" Canon EF-S 18-55 kit lens.

Only PS adjustment is curves to brighten (I severly underexposed the original shot) and add some contrast.

These were taken with a homenade pinhole lens on my D70. Cost was $0, since I used stuff I had laying around my camera bag.

Ooop, yes I did forget to add my weapon of choice. It was a Lensbaby I picked up used for $35 on eBay....

I guess the only way we can beat the EvillDude's cost is to have someone pay US to use their lens... Any sponsored shooters here?

Well I said your cheapest lens. If your cheapest lens is $1k, then that's your cheapest lens. This exercise probably should have been you least used/cheapest lens. The idea was to get people to dig deep in their bags and pull out a lens that they wouldn't normally use and go use it.

I took this photo with the Canon28-80 and a film camera. I tried to sell the lens recently for $50.00 and couldn't do it. I decided to keep it in case I need a lens I can fall on without too much regret. Compensation in the camera was set to 1+. Looks like it could have used more.
