Creativity Exercise #9: Take two steps forward

This creativity exercise will help you work on composition. Whenever you setup a shot, look through the viewfinder and ask yourself, "would this picture benefit from taking a couple steps forward?"

The object of this exercise is to learn how to fill the frame and cut out all the useless junk around the edges of you photograph. When you got out shooting in the next two weeks, try to force yourself to fill the frame. Even if you don't necessarily think it looks right, take a couple snaps and review then later. You maybe surprised at how filling the frame can add strength and focus to you composition. Go shoot and have fun.

Rules:

1. Any photo equipment you want to use is legal.

2. Basic photo editing only (Review the "How this works" thread for clarification).

3. Each participant can post up to 3 of their favorite shots.

Next Exercise: 01-13-2006

I shot this right after reading this exercise. Well, I did not actually take any steps forward but I did zoom only because I was thinking about this thread.

This is the shot #1 at 28mm before I was thinking about "two steps forward".

I this is shot #2 at 75mm after I thought about the exercise.

I think both of these shots work, but I wish I would think about this more often because I'm alway cropping something. Some people shoot tight and don't ever crop, me on the other hand alway shoot to wide so I will try to do this a lot more often.
