Creativity Exercise #13: Composition Refresher

First, I'm posting this a couple days early since I'll be out of town this weekend and I wanted to get this up.

Sometimes we tend to forget the basics in photography and it's nice to force oneself to do little refresher exercises for practice.

In this exercise, I'm tasking TPF to go out and shoot with the rules of composition in mind.
I want participants to go out and shoot photos that demonstrate the following basic rules. The catch is, try to only take 1 shot for each item on the list. I want you to really think about the shot and the exposure, maybe even pretend you're shooting film again.

Here's your shot list:

1. Rule of thirds
2. Framing elements (e.g. through a widow)
3. Symmetry
4. Diagonal lines
5. Vanishing Point
6. Perspective or Subject Size Exaggeration
7. Layers or Levels (e.g. foreground, middle-ground, background)
8. Fill the frame
9. Isolation (e.g. feeling of loneliness)
10. Sense of Movement (through the frame)

**Basic photo editing (Review the "How this works" thread for clarification).

**Each participant can post as many shots as they like, but try not to go crazy.

Next Exercise: 05-01-2006

Here's one of my shots from this morning .. took quite a few different perspectives ...thought this one meets the requirements of the exercise ... any thoughts for improvement always appreciated.

Randy,

It's a beautiful landscape and there's not much that I would change. I would maybe try angling the camera down a little bit more. This would get more of the rocks that are at the bottom of the frame, in the frame, and give the photo a little more feel of depth. This is one of the variations on this shot I would have tried just to see how it would have come out.

E4B -

Thanks .... I took several different angles/perspectives on various shots. So always difficult to present (in my opinion) what might be my better shots for evaluation/discussion without being hoggish with uploading a lot of pictures .... I'm working on a couple of other shots I might upload. Appreciate your thoughts and having these excercises ...
Randy

Here's a few more, I saturated the sky a little more on the vertical orientation, unfortunately the sky was really overcast and wasn't very much color in the sky, so trying to pull a little out.

Any suggestions appreciated.

This is such an AWESOME idea, I just emailed my buddies to plan a Photo Scavenger Hunt when I get my camera back. :)
