Creativity Exercise #17: Make it 3D

Conveying a three dimensional space on a two dimensional plane can be a difficult task. The 2 most common ways to produce depth in a photo are using a hyper-focal DOF with a wide lens or using a very shallow DOF with a long telephoto lens.

The objective of this exercise is to practice both techniques.

Use a wide lens to help create a very deep DOF and make sure you show distinct foreground, middle-ground, and background. (Tip: Angle you camera slightly downward to help included a little more foreground)

Use a telephoto to employ what I call the "cut-out" technique. Focus on your subject and throw the background completely out of focus. This will isolate your subject and if done correctly can make you subject look almost like a cut-out.

These are 2 very different techniques, but both serve to add interest and depth to your photos.

Have fun and good luck.

**Normally I request only basic photo editing, but this time you can do whatever editing you want.

**Each participant can post as many shots as they like, but try not to go crazy.

Here's my take - 08-26-2006, 08:36 AM

First Deep DOF

And Long Lens - Not the cutout effect asked for, but just another method I use for depth - shooting thru objects

First, two of the deep DOF variety:

Bridge across the Mississippi River at Vicksburg, MS - A really interesting Tourist Info Center.

The Survivor Tree at the Alfred P. Murrah Memorial in OK City - hauntingly beautiful site.

And one of the very shallow DOF with telephoto lens:
Shorebird at Matagorda State Island State Park:

Fun exercise.
Patti

Oops. I cheated. I forgot these were supposed to be shot just for the exercise. I just pulled these out of my gallery.
