DFW Pawn Shops? - 08-28-2009, 02:25 PM

Anyone know of any local pawn shops that carry DSLRs and/or DSLR lenses?

The few I checked out today I might as well been speaking Chinese when they asked me if they could help me find anything.

Unless you get very lucky, approximately the worst place in the world to buy a SLR lens is a pawn shop, trust me.

Try Cash America first, they do try to clean up the things they sell and each location has it's own possibilties.

All of the DSLR's I've seen in pawn shop have been priced above new prices such as a Olympus E510 with one lens for $1199.99 seen a few days ago..

What are you looking for? If you want to scour the used market, one good place is to start right here on TPF. Post a "WTB" (want to buy) thread in the buy/sell area.

Might also have better luck at some of the camera shops around here (Arlington Camera, Fort Worth Camera, etc.). I've bought only one thing off Craiglist (a battery grip) and am still pleased with that purchase. Then Web sites such as B&H, Adorama and KEH have used gear for sale, too. Never done FleaBay, but some people get good stuff off there. Also other forums, such as Fred Miranda, can yield good results.

I'll second Craigslist. I purchased my D80 body from there and haven't regretted it for a minute. I've alsoe purchased a few lenses and have been happy with that decision as well.

If I was looking for used equipment, I'd ask here and also check KEH.com, a very reputable seller of new and used equipment. They know their stuff, grade accordingly and are nice to deal with. I would not shop the pawn shops. My only experience with them (and in particular, ones on Lemmon Avenue in Dallas) was to advise them that my son's expensive (and new) trumpet had been stolen several years ago. Provided a receipt, serial number, etc. so they wouldn't take it if someone pawned it. Must have gone in one ear and out the other, because the police recovered it about a week later from one of the pawn shops I'd visited. The thief pawned it not 24 hours after I'd been in.

Depending on the shop, if they can get it cheap, they'll buy it and hand it over to the police. After all, if they hadn't bought it, it would have eventually gone to a private buyer or a dumpster and you'd never have gotten it back.

Most of what I see in pawn shops is over priced. I have had good experiences with adorama.com and e-bay.

Your chances of buying a stolen body/lens are highest at a pawn shop.

That's where a lot of burglars/thieves take their booty.
