Ft. Worth zoo is open now from 10am-4pm.
That kind of limits morning, evening.
My experience is that get there as soon as it opens. If the weather is good, some of the animals are "kicked out" of their inside enclosures so it can be cleaned, etc. Later in the afternoon is feeding time, and usually active.
Mostly, pick a nice day that is not too hot/cold, and find the animals that are most active that day. Stay there as long as you can stand it, and observe the animals a long time to be able to anticipate the best shots.
Take a tripod or mono and a long lens. filtes are handy on sunny days. Sunscreen, and a hat is mandatory.
