I’m looking for locations or suggestions in the North Texas area. Hiking in a bit is ok, as long as it is legal. Thanks

Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge, up on Lake Texoma West of Pottsboro. I've seen various waterfowl, birds, fox, deer, insects, etc. "Deer, turkeys, bobcats, hawks, and songbirds are abundant," claims the Web site.

Arbor Hills Nature Preserve, a far West Plano park.

Caddo-LBJ National Grasslands, in three major parts across North Texas. The Web site says, "White-tailed deer, small mammals, coyotes, bobcats, red fox, waterfowl, bobwhite quail, turkey, and songbirds thrive in the diverse habitats provided by the Grasslands."

And Texas offers Great Texas Wildlife Trails, complete with photo galleries of the various regions.

Check out Dallas County's web site of local parks.

I’ve visited Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge several times and plan visit there again this winter. It hosts lots of migratory bird life. The Caddo Grassland sounds very interesting. I would like to try and avoid areas that get a lot of traffic (human). Thanks for the suggestions.

Keep in mind that some of these areas are also hunting areas this time of year. Be sure to wear some blaze orange so you are seen...

Yeah, I just talked about this with my neighbor, who is a hunter. Unknown to me, the Hagerman Wildlife Preserve allows deer hunting. That came as a shock, as I’ve walked around in there several times. I bought some Camouflage stuff yesterday, but I failed to get any fluorescent orange. Hum.

Hagerman's hunt is limited to 4 (I think) weekends and the areas are very well marked to stay out. Of course, the season is over now so it is safe to wander. There are 5 different marked trails there that will lead you far off the track of human traffic. There are brochures at the visitor's center for each trail.

It will become a habit, but you should look at the posting date of the post you are replying to. He's probably been shot by hunters already...

Ohh! I hope not!

If not, the Fort Worth Wildlife Refuge is neat too. Lots of trails and some penned buffalo, on Eagle Mountain Lake I believe.

The refuge used to be a really awesome place but it went a little down hill from what Icould tell in the past 5 years. My dad and I used to go there all the time. Might be worth it to go there some more.

From what I understand, there is quite a bit of "wildlife" off of Greenville and Harry Hines. You may, however, be referring to a different kind of wildlife.
