From time to time, it seems many of us have searched long and hard for that elusive "big vacant warehouse" for some sort of industrial shoot we have in mind.
Last year I stumbled upon a massive, old, abandoned, steel industrial building that I think has terrific potential for all kinds of photography and videography. I'm guessing the main "room" is something like 100ft x 200ft of empty floor space with a 40ft high pitched ceiling. It's dusty, dirty, has no water, no electricity, and no HVAC. It has huge doors on both ends (have no idea if they work) and some windows along one side (mostly busted out). You could probably park twenty 18-wheelers in this thing.
Anyway, I am trying to find the owners to discuss leasing it and I'm curious what - if anything - a reasonable hourly site fee would be?
Wouldn't you like to know there is always a facility like this available that could accommodate anything you have in mind ?!?!? I know I would - but I doubt I can afford it...

Because of Insurance liabilities it would probably run several hundred bucks an hour with a minumum of X hours so probably close to a grand.
Jeeze why look at something that is THAT big unless you really need the space.
Like I mentioned in the other thread about this subject, abandoned empty warehouse space check out in the country and you may find something for a lot less.

Insurance may be a killer - no doubt about that - and true, who needs that much space - I dunno. But what is gained "out in the country"? Someone still owns that space...liabilities are still involved...why would it be any less?

Sometimes insurance is less out in the country?
My answer is I wouldn't pay anything to shoot there, but would be happy to bill a client willing to fork over the dough!

interesting position toverman...so would you ever pay for any location, or do you only shoot in free public areas? I don't think I've ever paid for a specific location, though I have had situations I would have paid for the right location...

If you have a good GL policy it should cover a short term use of a space like this and if the place is just sitting see how much they want per Day not by the hour just my thoughts

It think Todd means he would roll any site costs into his shooting fees.
I'd be interested if the location were special and the access was OK, the location easy, etc. etc.
The problem I see is that once the site is disclosed, why not just go there and trespass to get your shoot ? Pretty much what people are doing now...

It's part of my contract. I don't want fees to eat my lunch.
There have been times I've taken jobs for less than my standard fee, so in a sense I've "paid to play."

I was going to suggest the cotton mill in Mckinney. I have shot there and my recollection is that everyone has to sign a liability waiver and they charges $50/hr to shoot. For that you get to use the whole place.
Here is a link to their web site; Home

In regards to insurance liability may be less in a country based space because it is worth LESS than the city location hence a lower rate to some extent.
I believe that he wants the indoor industrial look and I bet you can find tons of places in the Detroit area.
Like mentioned in the other thread get to be friends with realestate agents who handle commercial space and maybe they can give you some leads, heck maybe a trade of shots of the building location for access/useage of the site. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
