Baccus Cemetery - Plano - 01-03-2010, 02:42 PM

There was a thread (sort of) a long time ago that mentioned Baccus Cemetery but the images are gone. Yesterday, I went over there and took a few.

Please note that it was very difficult to take any photographs without new buildings, cars, or dumpsters in the background!

All of these images were taken with a Nikon D700 and the Carl Zeiss Makro-Planar T* 2/100 ZF lens.

There is nothing inherently special about this grave but I liked the leading line and the DOF with the 3D feel:

I liked the "Cook" graves the best as they were the oldest (and newest) and had the most charisma. This one had been repaired at some point and in this photo it looks like it is going to fall out of the frame.

Someone obviously recently upgraded Mr. Cook's headstone. The old one was not to be found.

This one was interesting to me because of the backward "N"s. The first "N" at the top is correct so whoever did this headstone was either drunk or an apprentice I'm guessing. Also, the spacing is off and nothing is centered correctly.

Betsy Ann also got an upgraded headstone but what is intriguing is that the date she died changed on the newer headstone. I find it hard to believe they got that wrong on the first headstone... which is lying right beside the newer one.

This image is of the oldest (that I could find) Baccus grave. It's weird that the cemetery is named after the Baccus family because there are many more "Cook" graves and they are much older.

Here is a photo from the top of the parking garage overlooking the cemetery.

What good would I be if I didn't include a photo of a nearby reference point?!

Isn't it fascinating that you can see how rural this area once was when there's a cemetery in the middle of town? There's one in McKinney I'm dying to get in to (pun not intended, ha!) but the gate's locked (and there's a No Trespassing sign - otherwise I might just hop the fence). It's in the middle of a fairly new residential area, off of Hardin. There's also one smack in the middle of Plano, I think along Custer....or maybe Alma, I can't remember. Would love to stop in there sometime. These tiny cemeteries are just everywhere.

Nice Wil, I used to love going through old cemeteries. Haven't done for a long time, I might start that up again soon.

Brigitte, all cemeteries must be left accessible to the public even if it is on private property. You must close any gates like you found them, but they can not be locked. See the follow: Texas Laws concerning Cemeteries on Private Property

Dan,

Thanks for the compliment and the laws reference. That is definitely good to know.

Thanks, Dan! That is good information, since there are several cemeteries I've wanted to look at but didn't because the gates are locked. There's one right around the corner from my house, actually. A friend of mine gave me a book about Collin Co. cemeteries, I plan to visit several of them when the weather turns a little nicer!

Wil, as always, your images are amazing!

Thanks for the tour, looks like an interesting place. I like 2 & 5 the best. It's interesting to see how the city has grown up around the cemetery, you would expect these old tombstones to be in a more secluded (or rural) location.
