Smile Downtown Dallas at Night - 25 JAN 2010 - 01-26-2010, 10:53 AM

Location:
The ones you see below are of the Winspear Opera House and surrounding area. I took more that are not from this area but haven't had time to process them yet.

Image Capture
All of these images were taken using a Nikon D700 with the Nikon 24mm PC-E lens. All were taken on a tripod using bracketing between 5 and 9 shots and the ISO was either 200 or 400 for the 9-image brackets. A cable release was used in Ch mode. The aperture used was between F8 and F13. The RAW 14-bit NEF images were imported into Lightroom and a custom color profile was applied and then they were all exported to TIFF files. Those TIFF files were then used to generate HDR images and then tone-mapped and finally saved as a 16-bit TIFF file which was then imported back into Lightroom... to be exported to a JPG for web viewing. Dynamic HDR was used for some of the images and HDR Max was used for the rest. Photoshop was only used for the framing and matting.

I hope you enjoy!

- Wil

Thank you Charrie. It is a lot of work... but that work is enjoyable. It's more *me time* than anything else and I'm not working for a client so I can take my time and just enjoy it. A bonus is that I get nice images and learn about buildings I've never seen before.

I was a bit worried about the *security* at night in downtown Dallas... but it appears to only be in my imagination. I carried a knife nonetheless.

And, I made a decision when I went down there to only use ONE lens. That one happened to be the 24mm PC-E. I wished several times that I had the 100mm Zeiss and the 45mm and 85mm PC-E lenses (which I currently do not own). Of course, I would've been carrying around more stuff and that may have taken away from the creativity.

Like Paco said... I should take a lot of great shots with just one lens before moving on to another. It's good solid advice... which I doubt I'll be able to follow through with.

I'll try to post some more from this solo photo walk later this week.

Simply amazing. I've done my share of playing with HDR and creating some images but you are definitely taking the more scientific approach to it.
Nice work. I'm working on creating some HDR cars images. I hope to be able to share them soon in the transportation section.

Thanks Warren! I almost didn't even bother shooting the Lexus. I should've shot another one that was there too... it was red and had better lighting on it. Ah, next time.

Man Wil, those are terrific shots. Love the perspective in the first shot and how the HDR brings out the interior lights.

Good, good stuff!

And two of a beautiful Catholic church at the corner of Ross and North Pearl.

I don't really like this one but I can't figure out what bugs me about it.

I do like this one though.

Wil beautiful work man! All are awesome but I have a thing for churches, especially old ones like the Cathedral. Were the church pics on Mon night as well? I've been a couple times at night but they weren't having mass so I couldn't get it lit up.

Thanx for sharing, hope all is well.

Albert,

Thank you sir! Yes, the church photos were also on Monday... I just hadn't gotten around to processing them yet which is why they were delayed.

I was really disappointed in the captures I got of the church as a whole so I need to go back and reshoot it. I may need to find a different vantage point... or even bring a ladder to just get a little bit of a different view.
