Lighting Class (11-19-2005) Photos

This is a discussion on Lighting Class (11-19-2005) Photos within the Dallas / Fort Worth forums, part of the Texas category; I'm taking the initiative to start a lighting class results thread. I guess we'll split the Saturday and Sunday classes ...

Lighting Class (11-19-2005) Photos - 11-19-2005, 08:13 PM

I'm taking the initiative to start a lighting class results thread. I guess we'll split the Saturday and Sunday classes into separate threads to make it easier to know what goes where. Here's my initial favs, I picked one from each scene. I've done just a small amount of editing, ~2mins on each picture. I have to go back a tone down the reds a little, but I like the results so far.

Great shots! Didn't look like you had to do much post processing!

Scott:

I just wanted to thank you for putting on such a great lighting class. It was a pleasure meeting you and the rest of the folks today. Kudos also go out to the models and the make-up artist for their class and professionalism. Well done!

Nice work!! I like 'em.

The models and MUA did a great job. I'm looking forward to another great day tomorrow.

Thanks to all in attendance today. I couldn't imagine it going any smoother with exception of Pauls coffee run

Here's just one of each session that caught my eye. These are straight out of the camera with white and black points set, resize, and framed only.

Robert,
#1 and #2 really kept my attention, good combination of photographer and subject! #3 was OK. #4 could use a little PS work on the wrinkle just below her top. But a great job overall. Hmm, let me look at #2 again...I might have to bookmark this page....

Thanks Dan! I appreciate the comments. Yeah, I definitely felt the connection more with model #1, and she was the more experienced of the two. In most of my shots of model #2 they were really great shots, but one thing or another didn't quite click. I had a LOT of near misses.

Oh well, it's my first try at studio lighting, ever. So I was pretty pleased with the outcomes.

I'm having problems with the high key shots getting the background blown all the way across without screwing up the model. I've got blown white on each side of the background where the softboxes were pointed but the middle of the background is grey. What's the best/easiest way to blow out all of the background?

I would say click the white point(in levels or curves) on the gray area then mask the model out of that part of the layer.

Ding, ding, we have a winner! This is probably the easiest way to white out the background.

I was afraid you were going to say that. Problem is masking out the model is easier to say then do. Her hair is over one of those gray areas and I don't have a good way to mask where the hair intersects the background. I know there's software that does that, maybe I should just buy it.

Your worrying about it too much, try picking your white point without a mask at all. See what that looks like. This IS high key, so a little bit of the over exposed look isn't a killer.

Both the high key shots I posted where edited with no masks...just FYI.

You could use color range selection assuming you have PSCS2 (maybe PSCS has it too.) Go to select...color range...then select the gray and then you can do a curves adjustment on that selection
