Question Where for Fort Worth Skyline - 11-26-2005, 03:30 PM

I know a lot of folks here have gotten some great skyline shots of Fort Worth at day and night. I need to find out where to set up and what are some camera setting to use if taken at night. This will be one of some shots I want to use to make a 2006 calender with a Fort Worth theme. Thanks!

Roy, I know a few spots around town. . . one is from 7th street. . . in the area of the Osteopathic Medical School. . . another is from the back of Oakwood Cemetery (day only obviously). . .

from Oakwood Cemetery

and from the steps of the Carter Museum of Western Art on Lancaster & Camp Bowie

Top Of Trinity River Levee - 11-26-2005, 08:04 PM

Roy,

From top of Trinity River Levee just a little north of the Seventh Street Bridge. You can park just to the south of the Bridge in Trinity Park and hike up to the top of the Levee or park just west off the bridge on Seventh where they have Shakespeare In The Park and walk down a little ways to enter the top of the Levee.

Best light from this spot from 2:00pm to dark (with tripod and companion).

Here's a good site for after dark shots of the FW skyline. Also good for reflections off the river.

Drive into Trinity park, either from west 7th street on the north (where the Shakespere in the Park stage is), or from the south at I-30.

Either way, drive up the winding road in the park along the river until you pass under the Lancaster St. bridge. park your car where you can see it from the bridge. there is a basketball court under the bridge. climb the stairs up onto the bridge. stay on the "sidewalk" and walk out until you are just about over the river itself. You will see, and pick a good spot. Be careful, the traffic is going pretty good coming out of downtown. the buses shake the bridge a lot, so wait 'till the vibrations die down before taking those long exposures.

If your best friend is named Butkus and played pro football, invite him along. I have been there with others and by myself. never had any trouble, but you are in a public area, so think personal safety.

Hope this helps

Question View From The East - 11-26-2005, 11:13 PM

Roy,

Additionally, although I've never done it yet, there seem to be some good spots on the eastern side of downtown which are on good size hills on the north side of I-30 just west of the Oakland Exit.

These hills are much further away than those sites of the west side of downtown and will certainly need a longer lens; thus likely a tripod as well.

I want to explore these possibilities soon; the problem/challenge is the best light obviously is in the morning when I am not as available. However, I must say I have viewed some beautiful scenes of downtown from there on I-30 headed west.

Thumbs up Thanks Guys - 11-27-2005, 11:14 AM

Great shots! Lots of good places as y'all have demonstrated. We'll drive around and see which one we like best but I like all the shots y'all posted. At least we have some idea now of where to look. Any advice on night time set-ups on the camera?

It was windy out there this afternoon, especially windy on that bridge Jerry mentioned I got a few shots but I haven't checked to see what the smoke from parker county did on these captures. May have to make another trip. Just tried the bridge Jerry mentioned and the steps at Amon Carter today and tonight.

I told my wife to break out her can of pepper spray at the Lancaster bridge. Fortunately we didn't need it Didn't have any problems at all except for the hike up the stairs and the wind pushing us toward the rail. It was an adventure.

John, here's one from tonight. You can see the smoke haze in the air from the lights. I think I'm gonna have to go again.

Arrow Another From Amon Carter - 12-03-2005, 11:21 PM

Roy,

Here's one from today from the steps of the Amon Carter Museum for reference purposes to go along with Tom's and your's which were night shots. It's almost identical to Tom's perspective.

Bruce, your shot and Tom's look like y'all must of been standing in the exact same place with the same zoom factor! Only difference is one is day and one is night. Is Tom leaving some kind of mark? I looked and didn't see anything. hehehe

That sure is a crispy sharp photo!

Wink Spraypaint a little "TPF" - 12-03-2005, 11:57 PM

We all need to carry around a small can of spraypaint in our camera bags and when we find a spot where we can get a shot we like in the Japanese Gardens or Downtown or wherever, then we could just spraypaint the initials "TPF" on the ground or the closest tree.

That practice would sure save us all a lot of trouble in filling out our albums.

another good spot is at I30 just before the exit for Ft Woof Dog Park (I believe that is Beach St). If you pull over on the side of the road and get on top of one of the hills, it is a GREAT photo location for a GREAT skyline shot of Downtown Ft Worth.

Thumbs up Nice Photo - Facing West - 12-26-2005, 10:27 PM

Nice photograph, Cynthia and recent too. This perspective is much rarer than the ones from the other side of town. Looking forward to more of your shots.
