Native American Pow WoW - 09-10-2010, 08:25 AM

Starts today and goes through the weekend out at Trader's Village in Grand Prairie - photography is okay as long as the photos aren't used for commercial purposes. Anyone wanna go?

parking is $3 per car, admission is free. What you spend on food and arts/crafts is your own expense.

I've been there once and learned my lesson. You couldn't pay me to go back...

what was the problem? Since we've never been, and plan to take the kids, anything we should know about?

It's a lot of junk.... and once you've seen the first five booths of junk, you've seen them all. And how do I put this politely.... they basically move the trailer park to market.

I went to the pow wow once and enjoyed it very much. That being said, I made a decision years ago that I would no longer go to traders village unless I am catching a ride with someone else. One time I was there and caught someone trying to brake into my car. I have been there one time since when a good friend drove. As we were leaving we witnessed a couple guys checking car doors to see if they were unlocked. Security is there but they don't really seem to care.

geez, glad ya'll told me that about the car break in! We're travelling lightly - only carrying 1 bag and that has to have all I need in it - 24-70 and 80-200. I wish I had a circular polarizer but don't and can't splurge for one right now. We're going for the dance competition and such, not to buy anything.

I'm almost tempted to just take 1 lens and leave everything else home. Just don't know which 1

I may go Saturday or Sunday....We went a few years ago and it was a great experience seeing the pow wow itself. Their regalia is stunning and they were friendly about posing, etc. The traders village part of it is the downside-we just bypassed as much of that as we could and headed towards the dance.

It's a flea market...what'd ya expect? A shopping mall atmosphere?

Sure there's lots of repetitive junk and garage sale merchandise. However, if you know what you're looking for, you can find some pretty good deals such as plants, tools, fresh produce, impulse items and very entertaining people-watching. Oh My, is that whale really wearing that!!!!???

Been going there off and on for years and have never had a break-in issue with vehicles. I'm more concerned with that at the Parks Mall or 24 Hour Fitness. You can't hide from the dirty thieves of our world, them coyotes are everywhere.

Having never been to Traders Village before, I went on Sunday afternoon. There's about 400 acres of flea market and 1 acre of the event. The pow wow was fine but I didn't find the setup (bleachers surrounding a fenced ring) to be very conducive to photography. There were a lot of participants inside the ring with large umbrellas (for the sun) that blocked the view. Overall I would probably avoid Traders Village in the future - there are much better outdoor venues.
