Outdoor Areas in Ft. Worth with Fall Color? - 09-29-2010, 10:58 AM

I'm looking for spots to get some fall color at - gardens or whatnot, hopefully some free options too to give a bride of mine. So far I've got Ft. Worth Botanic Gardens, Clark and Chandor in Weatherford. Basically anything in between Fort Worth and Mineral Wells would work, just a good garden area hopefully with something nearby I can coax her to consider that's more grungy (barn or dilapidated house or something). Any ideas welcome! Thanks!

Sometimes the Japanese Gardens have great color. I have seen nothing besides a few individual trees otherwise.

DFW just doesn't have the right type of native trees to give a strong fall color, you may be able to find some red oaks starting to turn with a freeze hitting them (my red oak has patches of color on it right now) but we just don't have the trees with that fall fealing that you get up in the North East US-lots of sugars in the leaves.

Japanese Gardens in Ft Worth and parts of the Dallas Arboreteum are about it and I think there is some large garden west of Ft Worth in some small town that is open for the public to visit with a fee but since I've never been there I don't know what the mix of trees there is.

So it is better to settle for summer color-crepe myrtals- in the DFW area that many parts of the country don't have.

There are a lot of great fall colors right now. Bear Creek Park in Keller and Colleyville Nature Center both have good fall color. The Trinity River Audubon Center and log cabin village probably have some color worth seeing also. The maples and oaks around my house are showing the best color in years. Thurber west of Fort Worth has some old buildings right by I-20 that make good rustic backdrops without the hassle of trudging through a lot of fields.
