absolutely beautiful.
My only nitpick is the shallow DOF on the second pic. The others are as good as it gets IMHO.

Jim, I love the composition, color, and DOF on those hibiscus shots. Very well done.

Unhappy All Gone - 12-12-2005, 10:25 PM

Our Pentas, Cana, and Gold Star Esperanza were all gone in 36 hours last week. But, Jim, your excellent shots reminded me of how much I enjoyed them through the long summer. Thanks for posting.

I had to get them while they lasted because when winter decides to come it usually does a pretty good job of getting here.

Since I don't see the second shot I referred to yesterday anymore, let me say they're all great!

The shot you are referring to is a selective DOF shot and as such was done in that manner. I removed it to post another Hibicus shot.

Maybe I missed the point of the shallow DOF. I didn't see anything that it accomplished in that photo - just my take on it of course.
I went back and checked your first aboretum post, I loved all those as well. The full frames of flowers are great.

It is an artistic expression to produce an ethereal look. Sorry you didn't get it. Does this one explain it or do you just prefer everything in focus? Its fun to be able to use f/2 on a lens when you have it for a different look.

I believe I have a beginners grasp of the artistic merit of a shallow DOF. The earlier photo was of several small flowers with the ones in the front OOF and the ones in the rear OOF. I didn't see anything in the focused portion that merited special attention. The photo above however has the inner flower petals with delicate lines on them that are in focus, as well as the front petal with the fly on it. I think the shallow DOF works fantastic here to bring your attention to those features, and I love the shot buy the way.
Sorry if I hijacked your thread over this. Maybe I should curb my critisism somewhat.

Daryl
